Liverpool have clearly been the biggest disappointment of the season.
The manner of the defeat was a surprise, but no one was shocked that Brighton beat Liverpool this weekend. “I know you all feared this one”, Liverpool reporter Neil Jones wrote. “ I read the WhatsApp messages, the comments and the tweets. I saw the faces in the service station on the way down. Worried. “Tough one today,” they said. You didn’t fancy the Reds, did you?” No one did. Still, it was pretty ugly.
It’s really strange considering just how good Liverpool were in the second half of last season. The trophies can come, but one can easily make the argument that it was the best football Liverpool have played under Jürgen Klopp. Over the last 18 games of the 21/22 season, the Reds won all but two games, picking up 50 points out of 54 available. 18 games into this season, Liverpool sit on just 28 points. It’s really bizarre how quickly things have fallen apart.
So what has actually gone wrong? Why has it deteriorated so quickly? And more importantly, how on Earth can Liverpool drag themselves out of this mess?
