Can Liverpool really know Amorim is the guy?
It looks like he's the prime candidate to replace Klopp. Should he be?
It’s been a rough run for Liverpool.
Drawing 2-2 with Manchester United took a reasonable dent to their Premier League title claims. They of course completely imploded at home to Atalanta in the Europa League, losing 3-0 then not really coming close to pulling off a miracle in the second leg. To cap it off, they managed to draw a blank losing at home to Crystal Palace. It’s not totally over, but Liverpool look unlikely to win any more trophies this year after the Carabao Cup.
Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool have always been chaotic. We’ve seen them go through stretches of terrible form where it appears the entire club is imploding before things improve very quickly. To be Klopp’s Liverpool is to be volatile. They take risks that lead frequently to brilliance and occasionally to catastrophe. I think this is the price you pay for being a team like that in the modern game. I wrote last time about the way Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta have become so tactically risk-averse. Watching Liverpool against Atalanta showed why they have that impulse. Looking across Europe, I don’t think many top coaches see it the way Klopp does. We’re in an era of controlled football, and it’s only Klopp’s personal preferences that have stopped Liverpool going that way. The next manager, then, will probably change it up somehow.
