Hi, I’ve just read a book by Arrigo Sacchi about his 1988-1989 season with AC Milan, ‘The Immortals’. Have you read this? The Serie A season didn’t start till October! The European Cup started in September, so he had to play the first few rounds without much game fitness. The league was only 30 matches, and the squad had 3 strikers in. Interesting to see how things have changed.

I haven't, but sounds like I certainly should.

Any chance of a “quick hit” on Tonali? Watched Milan a few times last year and wasn’t convinced but media seem pretty gushing about the signing-what do you reckon?

I'll give it a go later in the week if there isn't another huge transfer that needs to take priority

How does Mac Allister’s transfer / wage fit in with Havertz / Mount etc? He seems a broadly similar player as an 8/10 albeit far more of an 8 than Maddison. I think you’re right about Liverpool’s ideas and best XI but it’s somewhat ominous that Darwin Nunez clearly isn’t in it.

It’s interesting, but hardly surprising, that Klopp’s interpretation of “free 8’s” seems to be a lot more industrious and less technical than Pep’s version.

Also curious what you think of the Mount transfer? Is this “if you don’t have anything good to say…”? Because I think it’s going to be a disaster and he already seems to be a victim of the COVID crunch

I think Mount is reasonable, I'm sure I'll write one of these when the deal is announced.

The reporting has been pretty murky on Mac Allister's wages so it's harder to do. But if Football Insider (I know) is right, he's on about £8m a year, so £40m over the contract. The very good Neil Jones says the transfer fee is just £35m straight, no add ons. So that's a very reasonable £75m over the contract, but the reporting isn't as good as some of the others on this.
